History
The American Bulldog is a mastiff-type dog. Its ancestors were working bulldogs brought to the British North American colonies.
It was bred for farm and ranch work, as a guardian, a stock dog and a catch dog.
The United Kennel Club recognised the breed on 1 January 1999. The American Kennel Club has listed it only in its Foundation Stock Service, since November 2019, so it is not a full AKC breed.
The American Bully, a separate breed, developed from the American Bulldog.
Temperament
There are two types: a heavier “Bully” type, also called Johnson or Classic, and a more athletic type with a longer muzzle. Many modern dogs are a mix of the two, called “hybrids”.
The AKC has not published a temperament description for the breed, so this page does not give one.

The American Bulldog stands 52–70 cm at the withers and weighs 27–54 kg.
