About the breed

History

The Jack Russell Terrier comes from North Devon in England. In the early 19th century the parson John “Jack” Russell bred these dogs for fox hunting, and the breed is named after him.

It is closely related to the modern Fox Terrier and is distinct from the Parson Russell Terrier.

The FCI and the UK treat the Jack Russell Terrier as a separate breed. The American Kennel Club does not list it; its closest AKC breeds are the Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier, both in the Terrier Group. The figures on this page use the Russell Terrier as the reference.

Temperament

The AKC describes the Russell Terrier as alert, inquisitive and lively. It likes to be vocal.

Care

The coat is mainly white with coloured markings, and it can be smooth, rough or broken. Shedding is occasional.

The Russell Terrier stands 25–30 cm and weighs 4–7 kg, with a life span of 12–14 years. The Parson Russell Terrier stands 33–36 cm and weighs 6–8 kg, with a life span of 13–15 years.
