About the breed
History
The French Bulldog comes from Paris, France, where it appeared in the middle of the 19th century. It was apparently a cross of Toy Bulldogs from England with local Parisian ratters, and it was bred as a companion dog.
Its upright “bat ear” became the breed standard after American fanciers preferred it over the folded “rose ear”. In the early 20th century the French Bulldog was a high-society dog in the United States.
The American Kennel Club lists it in the Non-Sporting Group.
Temperament
The AKC describes the French Bulldog as adaptable, playful and smart. It barks infrequently.
Care
The French Bulldog stands 28–33 cm and weighs under 13 kg.
Shedding is regular. The life span is given as 10–12 years.
