About the breed
History
The Beagle comes from Great Britain, where it was bred as a scent hound for hunting rabbit and hare — a sport known as beagling. The American Kennel Club lists it in the Hound Group.
A Beagle looks like a much smaller foxhound. Its nose has also given it a modern job: Beagles work as detection dogs, finding prohibited agricultural imports and food in quarantine.
Temperament
The AKC describes the Beagle as friendly, curious and merry. It likes to be vocal.
Care
The breed comes in two size varieties. The smaller one stands up to 33 cm and weighs under 9 kg; the larger one stands 33–38 cm and weighs 9–14 kg.
Shedding is occasional. The life span is given as 10–15 years.
